First of all, I submitted Faceover 1.5 to the App Store. It adds the ability to upload photos to Facebook. Faceover Lite 1.3 will soon follow with the same feature. Now, on to some interesting download statistics. Faceover has now had over 15,000 total downloads in the nine months since its release. Here's the breakdown by country: In the seven months since Faceover Lite was released, it has had over 52,000 total downloads. And the breakdown by country: This comparison shows some useful informat... Continue reading ...
Upcoming Faceover Features and One Nasty Bug
Faceover 1.4 development is well underway. I'd say it's more than halfway done. Here are some of the features I'm planning to be released in version 1.4: - Selection of rectangular shapes
- New and improved user manual
- New startup screen to make the app easier to learn
- Demo video showing the app in use
I hope it's a great release! The next version (1.5) will offer uploading photos to Facebook. Now on a more sinister note, I ran into a horrid nasty bug while creating my own custom modal view controller.... Continue reading ...
Faceover hits 10,000 total downloads, Faceover Lite hits 25,000
Well, unfortunately the app did not stay anywhere near number one in iPad Photography for long, but just recently Faceover has hit 10,000 total downloads in four months. Faceover Lite has reached 25,000 total downloads in half that much time. It's really cool to see how the downloads add up over time even though it feels like there aren't very many on any given day. I initially released Faceover Lite in the very crowded Entertainment category. Its ranking has dropped below 400 for the iPad Ent... Continue reading ...
Faceover hits #1 in iPad Photography with 1.1 release
Faceover 1.1 was ready for sale on the App Store yesterday. It was initially rejected because the iPad version was allowing multiple popovers which is a no-no according to the Human Interface Guidelines--thanks Apple for catching that one :). And of course the really exciting news is that Faceover hit the #1 spot for the iPad Photography category. However, it's neck and neck with ArtStudio and Photogene. Here's where the three are in the top overall iPad applications: 63 - Faceover 65 - ArtStudi... Continue reading ...
Faceover reached #2 for iPad Photograpy Apps
Awesome! Apple is featuring Faceover in the spotlight section of the iPad App Store for a few days now! Thanks to this prime placement, Faceover jumped as high as #2 for iPad photography, the 40s for iPhone photography and in the 50s for all paid iPad apps. There have now been over 2500 downloads. I think if I can just maintain the visibility and get the app in front of people it should continue to do well. In other news, I submitted an update today that fixes several things and improves on th... Continue reading ...
Faceover Moving Steadily up the App Store Rankings
I checked Faceover's ranking on the App Store tonight. It's up to number 13 for iPad in the Photography category and number 80 for iPhone Photography. I've sent a few review request emails out to different app review sites but no bites there yet. I'm pleasantly surprised with the iPad ranking but I really want to get the ranking up on the iPhone side. I think some of the upcoming features will help do that. We'll see! Continue reading ...
Faceover is "New and Noteworthy"!
On its second day in the App Store yesterday, Faceover had 125 downloads. 69 were from from the US and the rest were scattered around at least 20 different countries. Also when I checked iTunes this morning I was delighted to see that the Gods at Apple have chosen to spotlight Faceover in the New and Noteworthy section within the photography category. Current ranking within the photography category is 16 for iPad and 107 for iPhone. I'm expecting it to jump higher tomorrow from the great adver... Continue reading ...
Faceover Ready for Sale on the App Store
I got the approval email from Apple's app review team yesterday around noon. Faceover was in the App Store within a few hours after that. This morning I saw that there were 44 downloads in the first half day of release--40 in the US, 2 in Mexico, 1 UK and 1 Canada. Of course, one of those downloads was my own but I think 44 is a good start. I can work with that. Continue reading ...
Slight Snag With Faceover Submission to the App Store
Rejected! The app review team rejected Faceover because one of my screenshots was "objectionable". Apparently the screenshot of my sister in her "Arab man" Halloween costume is not appropriate for all ages. Isn't that funny? Fortunately they didn't reject the app itself so I just had to remove the screenshot and reply back to their email. After that you'd think the app would be approved, right? Nope. The status changed back to "In Review". :) Continue reading ...
Faceover In Review
It's been 7 days and about 5 hours and my application status just changed from "waiting for review" to "in review". Supposedly the "in review" part of the process takes about 24 hours so I might have an app ready for sale tomorrow! Last night I worked on a Faceover bug that has really been bothering me. The problem is that whenever part of the image is copied, the visual quality of the copy degrades slightly. This is especially noticeable for low resolution images. After spending two or three ... Waiting for Review
Yes, here I am six and a half days after submitting Faceover with iTunes Connect still showing "waiting for review". They haven't even started reviewing it yet! Oh well, when I submitted Lexify last year it took a total of nine days so maybe it'll still be done before then. <sigh> Since I'm blogging anyway...here's an Obama Faceover: Continue reading ...
Faceover submitted to App Store
It's really exciting to submit an app to the store. Of course, it's much more exciting when it actually gets approved. I submitted Faceover, my new app for iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch, to the App Store a couple days ago and can't wait until I can actually tell people it's ready to download! Faceover is a really fun app for editing photos of faces. By copying, pasting, resizing, rotating, flipping and swapping portions of photos, you can make some amazing (and amazingly funny) pictures. I got t... Continue reading ...
New Degree, New iPad, and New Focus
I did it! I finished my Master's degree! I spent the last four years of my life taking one class at a time while working full time. I enjoyed the distance program in Software Engineering at Southern Methodist University (I even managed to pull off a 4.0). Of course, the best part about finishing the degree is the fact that I now have some free time again. And a little free time can go a long way with software development. In what little extra time I managed to wring from between the day job, s... Continue reading ...
Distracted, Stalled and Changing Direction
Over the summer I spent a few good weeks on my app for finding online classified ads and ended up with a mostly usable app. However, there are a few reasons why I have decided not to go further with the idea--for now at least. The news site whose RSS feed I was planning to use is just not useful enough as is. I'm guessing this may be by design to keep people from hijacking their traffic. Specifically, the RSS feed is limited in four ways: it only shows the last two days of posted ads, it does ... Continue reading ...
No PhoneGap for Next App
I have decided which of the ideas from my constantly gowing list will be my next smartphone app. It's an app for finding online classified ads in Utah. I may expand it to other areas later but for now I'll focus on local ads so I can get something released soon. I'll call it AdFinder for now at least. I tried out iWebKit with PhoneGap and liked how it looked. I almost decided to use it for my next iPhone app. However, I decided not to for two reasons: - I'm a little concerned about reports on the...

Lexify and PhoneGap Update
I submitted a minor update for Lexify to the App Store last Thursday. It was approved today, six days later. Of course, those six days include a holiday weekend too so I would hope that app updates usually get approved faster than that. I've been playing with PhoneGap and tried the iUI library because I want an iPhone-like user interface. I decided not to use iUI. There is no documentation and very little sample code. It is only at version 0.2 though so I understand. My next task is to try out... Continue reading ...
First Week's Download Totals for Lexify and Lexify Lite
My download totals from iTunes are in for my app's first week. Lexify Lite: 453 downloads Lexify: 22 downloads Of Lexify's 22 downloads, here's the country breakdown: 17 USA 1 Great Britain 1 Australia 1 New Zealand 1 Mexico 1 Sweden Nothing spectacular, but at least it's selling. Also, things have definitely slowed down after the first two or three days. I've started to rework the Lite version a little to include more words and ads but remove the save and view tabs. The Lite version seems to be the be... Continue reading ...
App Price vs. Download Volume
So I lowered the price for Lexify yesterday morning after I saw that only about 1-2% of the total Lexify downloads from the App Store were paid versions. It looks like this was a good choice. After the price change there were 87 free downloads and 7 paid ones, or about 8% of the total. This is in the 5-10% range that I would have hoped for. Since 7 purchases at $2.10 (after Apple's cut) = $14.70 and the previous day's 3 purchases at $3.50 (also after Apple's cut) = $10.50, the lower price is ... Continue reading ...
Lexify Lite Got 200 Downloads Yesterday
There were 200 downloads of Lexify Lite from 32 different countries yesterday but only three downloads of the full version. About half of the downloads were from the US. I had no idea that iPhones were so popular internationally! However, this means only 1.5% of the Lite users are buying Lexify. I think my initial price of $4.99 was too much to ask for people that are used to spending $1 on their apps. I decided to change the price to $2.99 and change the primary category from Education to P... Continue reading ...
What's Next?
Lexify (Lite version) got its first iTunes review from someone I don't know. fatkid311 says "Interesting app my friend. What can I look forward to next?" and gave it 5 stars. Thanks fatkid311! So what is next? I have a list of possible ideas for apps. There are two in particular that I'm looking into right now: My favorite idea at the moment is an app for making phone calls and reading text to the person being called. I think it'd be especially fun to use for prank phone calls. I'd really like ... Continue reading ...
Lexify Lite Approved for the App Store
Yesterday afternoon the free version of Lexify was approved for the App Store. Like the full version, it took nine days. The only difference with the Lite version is that it only has a fraction of the Latin roots that the full version has. But since the functionality is exactly the same, I guess it makes sense that it would take the same amount of time for Apple to review it. Oh, and Lexify Lite had 43 downloads (39 from the US store, 4 from Canada) on its first evening in the App Store. Cool! Continue reading ...
First Revelary iPhone App Approved by Apple
Nine days after submitting Lexify, my first iPhone app, I received an email today from Apple that the app has been approved--on a Sunday even! The app's status changed from the "in review" yellow light to the pleasant "ready for sale" green light. I did end up going back to change my App Store images to jpegs a few days ago just to make sure that wouldn't cause any problems. So Revelary now officially has a released product! I added it under the Education category in iTunes for a price of $4.... Continue reading ...
PhoneGap Button Click Speed
It's been a week now and my iPhone app still shows "in review" on the iTunesConnect site. Good news about PhoneGap though--I found out you can use the onTouchStart event instead of onClick to get buttons to respond immediately. Here's a link to the PhoneGap Google Group post for more info. Continue reading ...
Started Playing With PhoneGap for iPhone
I downloaded the PhoneGap project for cross platform development on iPhone, Android and Blackberry. The idea is that you write apps using standard web development technologies (HTML, CSS and JavaScript) and they end up looking and acting like standalone applications. I tried out the sample PhoneGap project in the iPhone simulator and on my iPod Touch. While the interface looks fine, I was a little disappointed. When you touch a button on the app, there's a very noticeable delay (maybe half a s... Continue reading ...
Waiting for App Approval
Two days after submitting my first iPhone app to the App Store, my financial contract has been changed to "contract in effect". Both Lexify and Lexify Lite show "in review" for their status but this is no surprise. I'm expecting the review process to take about a week. Continue reading ...
Submitting an iPhone app to the iTunes App Store
In August 2008 I decided I wanted to teach myself to develop software for the iPhone with my limited amount of free time. I decided to buy a MacBook which happened to be the first non-Microsoft computer I had ever owned. After nine months and $100 for an iPhone developer license, I finally have something to show for it--assuming of course that my app ( Lexify) gets approved by Apple for distribution on the iTunes App Store. As I was doing the actual app submission last night and today, I decide... Continue reading ...
